Swindon auditions for a brand new Town Crier at Wharf Green this August

A competition to appoint Swindon’s next Town Crier will take place at 1pm on Saturday 25 August 2025 at Wharf Green, Canal Walk, Swindon. The event will form part of the closing weekend of a month-long programme of street events in the town centre.

The last person to hold the title was Fred Ferris (pictured), who served for 15 years until his death in 2013. Fred was a well-known figure at civic and community events across the town. His original ceremonial costume has been kindly donated by his family and will be passed on to the new Town Crier. The Wyvern Theatre’s costume department has agreed to adapt the outfit as required.

The position will be a voluntary role for a fixed five-year term, supporting civic events, local festivals, and town centre activity. Entrants must be 18 or over and capable of delivering clear, projected announcements.

Owen Collier, the current Town Crier for Royal Wootton Bassett, will oversee judging, alongside the Mayor of Swindon Faye Howard.

“This competition marks a proud moment for Swindon,” said Kris Talikowski, Chair of the Old Town Business Association. “By reviving the role of Town Crier, we honour Fred’s legacy and bring community spirit and tradition back into the heart of the town.”

“We’re delighted to be involved in running and hosting this competition,” added Shirley Ludford, Station Manager at Swindon 105.5. “Holding the event in the town centre brings together Old and New Town via the town’s community radio station. It’s a unique local opportunity and we look forward to seeing, and hearing, the contestants.”

The competition is delivered in partnership with Swindon 105.5 and hosted on their live stage.
